Basically, we think the institution is failing all of us. From the labor structure in higher ed to their recruitment, admissions, tuition, and ties to corporate and government interests.
Meanwhile, classrooms are often actively harmful environments entrenched in white supremacy, misogyny, and normative culture.
This also carries over into educational offerings outside the institution. Some feature the same inequity as higher ed, exploiting the creative community for their profit, while producing unsafe environments for learning. While other programs may be healthier - they often still cost too much and lack quality, depth, rigor, and adaptability.
In a first small step to build greater engagement and community through Drawstring, we will be developing low-cost educational programming on a range of topics. We are interested in study that crosses mediums and disciplines, brings together different communities, and provides something that audiences need and want right now.
Some programs will be single evenings, some spanning multiple months — structured to adapt to the needs of the content and the audience, not vice versa. New programs will be released regularly. Stay tuned.
If you are interested in getting involved and/or would like to pitch a piece of programming, please submit your info here.
